Hulu, the premium YouTube
These days, there are hundreds of ways to watch videos online. From YouTube to iTunes to FloTV on your cell phone, the internet has opened up the doors to a video free for all. While there are millions of videos available online, sometimes it can be hard to weed out the crap from the good stuff. Sites like YouTube are polluted with poor quality user-submitted videos or catch-them-while-they-last clips from your favorite TV shows, which are often pulled from the site for copyright infringement before you can even copy the embed code to your blog. That’s where Hulu.com comes in. This streaming video site, co-owned by NBC Universal and News Corp., offers high-quality content from hundreds of your favorite movies and TV shows and you never have to spend a penny because … Read entire article »

SXSW Review: Año Uña
Año Uña is a movie that definitely defies the regular rules of film because it tells the story in a sequence of 24 photographs flipped as the story progresses. All of this is actually based on director Jonas Cuaron‘s real life experience taking pictures of his family for two years straight, which inspired the script for Año Uña. The film is about Molly, a college student traveling to Mexico to escape the problems she has in New York, and Diego, (Diego Catano) a 14 year old Mexican whose family takes in Molly for international housing in order to pay for their grandfather’s cancer treatment. The story takes place in modern day America and in Mexico and, just as the language changes, so do the subtitles, from translated English, to translated Spanish. As … Read entire article »

SXSW Review: Goliath
SXSW film festival held a special screening of a film called Goliath, named for a cat who is owned by an unnamed main character. This middle aged male character (David Zellner) is experiencing the bad luck in life and nothing is going right. He is getting a divorce, he is demoted from his job, and on top of it all, he just lost his cat, Goliath. In his utter loneliness he devotes his time to watching obscure Asian porn and doing housework. The concept does sound like this movie should win an award for the amount of thought and fluidity of the story, but the film fails to deliver this tale. The direction and editing fell short and the sound was either really loud or really soft as if there was … Read entire article »

Trashwire’s Wil Chinchilla to cover SXSW 2008
An astounding nine regional premieres will be taking place at this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival in Austin, TX. All of these premieres are early screenings of new mainstream movies that will serve as a testing ground for how the films will be marketed and distributed to the rest of America. The only major difference from a regular trip to the movies is that, at these screenings, there is a major opportunity to see the cast of the films and chat with them about each production. Nearly every great indie movie that will be coming out this year will be premiering at SXSW. The films are all battling for the coveted 9:00pm screening time, so the hardest decision for any attendee might be whether to go see Harold & … Read entire article »
