Away We Go will outlast summer blockbusters

Away We GoSam Mendes strikes gold again with his latest film, Away We Go, starring John Krasinski (TV’s The Office) and Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live) and written by Dave Eggers (upcoming script for the movie version of Where the Wild Things Are) and Vendela Vida. The film is about Burt Farlander (Krasinski) and Verona De Tessant (Rudolph), a couple in their early 30’s still living like college students. Both Verona and Burt are well educated and self-employed, and although they live in a broken down trailer with a cardboard window, it appears to be by choice, rather than need. When realizing Verona is pregnant with their first child, the couple realizes they must now face adulthood and live grown up lives. After learning that Burt’s parents, played perfectly by Catherine O’Hara and Jeff Daniels, are moving half way around the world a month before their first grandchild is due, the couple decides to set off on a road trip to discover the perfect place to raise a family.

Verona is convinced that for them to find the best place to raise a family they must have friends close by, so the couple sets off on their journey, heading to Phoenix, Madison, Montreal, and other places along the way. After their travels, they come to the conclusion that no one else is quite in love like them and that their friends may not be the best examples for raising children. They make one last trip to where they know no one in the area before they come to their final decision of where to settle down and begin their family.

Although I wouldn’t classify this movie as a romantic comedy, there’s more romance between Verona and Burt then you’ll find between two leads in most any mainstream rom-com Hollywood puts out these days. While this film won’t be seen by nearly as large of an audience as summer blockbusters such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen or Terminator: Salvation, it will have longer staying power over the years and have a much larger impact on those that see, as opposed to what the previously mentioned films will have on audiences. This is an indie film that I believe everyone should take the time to find and see. You won’t be disappointed
