RealPlayer cracks down on YouTube videos

A bit of news for those of us who like watching clips of the feeds on YouTube…

RealNetworks is cracking down on people posting anything from their live feeds on the internet. While they’ve never had a problem with feed clips on YouTube before, it seems that they now consider any sharing of feed clips to be copyright infringement.

Keith from BB Chatter just posted a letter he got from RealNetworks saying…

“I want to remind all of you about the user generated content policy from RealNetworks. Any video from the live feeds is Copyright material and is not to be distributed publically. If you are posting any videos from the feeds on YouTube, Clipser, DailyMotion, or any other UGC site your contact information will be passed along to the RealNetworks legal team. This policy is also in effect for any content that your public user base may be posting in your forums. If you have any Copyright material posted, I advise you to remove it immediately.”

It seems pretty stupid because I doubt that anyone who would have bought the feeds has opted to just watch YouTube. There are zillions of feed clips on there and finding any specific one can be damn near impossible. The entire point of the feeds is that they are live, happening right now. Only watching videos on YouTube negates the immediacy of a “live 24/7″ internet feed. People who care about watching the drama as it unfolds will still buy the feeds, so how are the YouTube clips any kind of threat to RealNetworks?

Anyway, this is kind of lame news because that means I probably won’t be posting too many more YouTube clips on here either. Don’t want to upset the angry corporate morons over at RealNetworks.
