This year, I had the exceptionally good fortune to be able to spend my birthday at Comic Con. Day 2 brought more costumes, more fans, and lots more free schwag.
Yesterday’s surprise sighting was Lou Ferrigno, but today, I bumped into Patrick Warburton while crossing a crowded hallway.
I also noticed a lot more hot superheroes. Before, the crowd was filled with genuine fans, but much of today’s crop of buff spandex-clad crimefighters were plants, paid by a company to promote something. From a sexy Captain America to an army of hot Spartans, Comic Con was like a meat market. Never let it be said that nerds can’t be sexy, because there were certainly some smoking hot ones there today.

My feet are aching, my hair looks like Chaka Kahn from all the humidity and body heat, and I just saw a guy in a bathrobe running down a hallway yelling, “I’m with Superman!” Must be Thursday at Comic Con in San Diego.
The Convention Center is daunting–it feels like it’s the size of the entire Denver airport. The various booths are colorful, but they’re really a backdrop for cool geeks of all kinds to let their geek flags fly and show up in full costume. I actually enjoyed a lot of the fans in costumes more than some official events and I was surprised at how overwhelmingly friendly everyone has been. Far from the pompous atmosphere of a Hollywood event, the Comic Con fans are happy just being themselves–even if they are wearing a Darth Vader mask.

Get Him to the Greek isn’t exactly a sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but it brings back that film’s most memorable character, Aldous Snow, played brilliantly by Russell Brand.
In Sarah Marshall, Aldous is a famous English rock superstar who just so happens to be sleeping with the main character’s girlfriend. Despite all that, he remains likeable and even becomes friends with his rival.
Fast forward a few years and Aldous has become a washed-up drug addict on a downward spiral of self-destruction. His career is stagnant and his latest single, the cliché socially conscious “African Child”, has been labeled the worst thing to happened to Africa since apartheid.
Enter lowly record label employee Aaron Green (Jonah Hill). As a longtime fan of Aldous and his band Infant Sorrow, Aaron proposes an idea to his boss Sergio (Sean “P. Diddy” Combs) to revive Aldous’ career with an anniversary performance at the Greek Theater. ...

He is given 72 hours to get Aldous to the gig in order to make points with Sergio.

What follows is a series of insane parties, drug binges, and anonymous sexual encounters that throw the reserved and nerdy Aaron into the wild world of rock and roll.

It may sound like a cliché plot, but the sheer comedic power of Brand and Hill take Greek to the next level. The physical comedy and obvious jokes hit the target. When Aldous injects Aaron with adrenaline, “like in Pulp Fiction”, Hill elevates what could be dumb and slapstick into a hilariously engaging episode.

Even better than the bigger jokes, the small throw-away lines—many of which are likely improved—make for some of the funniest moments in the film. Aldous’ “hateful respect” for Aaron after a harsh criticism of his record is classic Brand. In another scene when Aaron talks to his doctor girlfriend (Mad Men’s Elizabeth Moss) he chastises her for her holier-than-thou attitude by reminding her that not all doctors are good and that Nazis had doctors too.

Most surprising is the spectacular comedic turn from Combs. Making the Band has showed us that Combs can be quite the moody executive—having contestants walk to Brooklyn to fetch him a slice of cheesecake comes to mind—and this role perfectly parodies that persona.

To prepare Aaron for babysitting Aldous, Sergio gives him lessons in how to “mind fuck” someone. The exchange between Hill and Combs is both awkward and hilarious, and seems like an authentic moment between an exec with too much power and one of his whipping boy employees.

Still, Brand owns this movie. Unlike other comedies that attempt to send up the rock and roll lifestyle by dressing their stars up as wild rockers, like Rainn Wilson in The Rocker, Brand has the true swagger of a rock god. He’s charismatic, he’s sexy, he’s got unique style, and he has legitimate vocal talent. If the lyrics to the songs weren’t so funny, you would actually rush out to buy an Infant Sorrow CD.

It should come as no surprise that Greek is one of the funniest movies we can expect this summer. Producer Judd Apatow has loaded the cast with his usual comedic arsenal and Jason Segel’s original characters deserved life beyond Sarah Marshall. I, for one, am keeping my fingers crossed for Aldous Snow’s next come back tour.

This is to be expected when walking into a brand new episode in the life of this Manhattan foursome.

The movie finds Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) married to longtime love Big (Chris Noth),but still wanting to go out and enjoy the Manhattan social scene. Carrie’s friends Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristen Davis) are also married, but lead lives much different then Carrie. Both women focus more on family life rather then the Manhattan nightlife. And there is, of course, Samantha (Kim Catrall), who continues to live the single life, and fuel’s Carrie’s craving to be out on the town.

The continuous wardrobe changes displayed an array of couture that was at times fabulous, and other times questionable. The fashion statements are nothing new in the world of Carrie Bradshaw, or shall I say Carrie Preston. This is the last name Carrie took after marrying John James Preston a.k.a. Mr. Big in the previous film. During the documentation of the few months in the life of Carrie and Big, it became apparent that this single gal has truly settled down. Even though the show and the previous film focused on Carrie and her relationships with men, the sequel took a turn to focus on friendship, and confirmed that the relationship between the four women is stronger then ever.

The foundation of this feel-good sequel is a unique adventure filled with typical Samantha Jones antics and comical one-liners. As a long time Carrie Bradshaw fan, I must say that I am ecstatic that love has finally come around in her life. Yet, the time when I could remotely relate to Carrie has come and gone. Sure she used to spend $600 on a pair of shoes, but she was also full of life, and life is never perfect. Now, it seems that all the women have settled into a place that is far from what the show originally strived to be. Carrie has become lifeless, much more materialistic then she ever used to be, and attempting to relate to her current status in this world in near impossible.

The film is plagued by various incidents of relationship mishaps in each characters life, yet the concept has moved far from feeding into reality and has become more surreal. Perhaps I am resentful that my long time love affair with Carrie Bradshaw has come to an end after so many years, but I just do not find any attributes that keep me united to her character. This film was more a “good time” without the deeper meaning than the Sex and the City fans are accustomed to.

Chris Rock’s new documentary Good Hair began when one of his daughters came to him to ask, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” The question inspired Rock’s journey through the world of black hair, from barbershops to celebrity interviews to the largest black hair show in Atlanta.
Combining the cultural and historical investigation of a Michael Moore exposé with bizarre characters who could be fresh out of a Christopher Guest mocumentary, Good Hair manages to both educate and entertain.
One of the overarching themes of the film is the question of what defines “good hair”. Celebrities like Ice-T, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symoné, Dr. Maya Angelou, Salt n Pepa, Eve and Reverend Al Sharpton all discuss the cultural implications of the black community classifying straight hair as good hair. Each discusses his/her own personal struggle with achieving the desired look. Sharpton is especially amusing when describing the first time ...

Sharpton is especially amusing when describing the first time he used relaxer at the request of James Brown.

Rock gives an in-depth look at the topic of relaxer, from talking with celebrities and real people who use it to visiting factories that produce it. He even meets with a scientist who shows him the potentially dangerous aspects of this “creamy crack” that so many people regularly put on their hair. In one shocking experiment, the chemicals used in relaxer are shown to disintegrate and aluminum soda can. Despite the potential danger from the strong chemicals, millions continute to use relaxers and parents even apply the concoction to the still-forming follicles of children as young as three.

The black hair industry generates billions of dollars and, even more than relaxer, a large chuck of that money goes to weaves, which can cost as much as $5,000. Once considered a “beauty secret” hair weaves are now out in the open and on the heads of millions of women around the world. Stars like Long and Symoné proudly talk about the quality of their extensions or the arduous process of getting a weave done. Rock also talks to men at a barbershop who joke about not being able to touch their girlfriends’ heads because they don’t want to mess up an expensive weave.

Interviews with weave-wearers prove to be humorous and amusing, but the segment that takes place in India is absolutely fascinating. The vast majority of human hair used in these weaves and extensions comes from India and hair is actually one of the country’s top exports. Rock interviews women who give up their hair in a religious ceremony as well as men who then take the hair and sell it to American beauty suppliers. It’s amazing to think about how many women have no idea of the long journey their weave endured before it got to their head.

With all the discussion about hair as culture, you might think the theme could get a little heavy but, because it’s produced by the same team that brought us The Chris Rock Show, the doc manages to keep up a high level of humor as it drops some knowledge.

The funniest moments come from the three contestants in the Bronner Bros. Hair Show in Atlanta. In scenes that seem like something out of Best in Show, we see competitors Tanya Crumel and Kevin Kirk, Jason Griggers, Freddie J and Derek J conceptualize and rehearse their performances for the Hair Battle Royale. Crumel and Kirk feel confident that they have Jesus on their side while Freddie struggles to explain her elaborate theme and Derek seems to only think about the custom-made leather heeled boots he’ll be wearing. Griggers, the sole white contestant and self-proclaimed “Rosa Parks of black hair” has a surprisingly laidback attitude that makes him one of the most interesting contestants.

I must say, the doc connected with me on a major level because, growing up as a biracial child in a predominantly white town, I always thought I had the ugliest hair on the planet. Seeing this film made me realize that there are millions of women (and some men) who feel the exact same way and that there are gigantic industries built off this follicle frustration. Best about Good Hair is that it never gets overly preachy or ceases to keep you laughing. Rock’s narration is spectacular and he brings a unique quality to interviews that not only puts the subjects at ease but also opens the door for comedy. I absolutely loved Good Hair and would recommend that everyone, black, white or otherwise, check it out.

It is apocalyptic, simply because of a baby photoshoot gone biblically immoral. And G-A-Y, since the non-stop techno music in the beginning sets the mood for the entire movie exuding guy on guy action; even if the guy is a ghost. In comparison to Borat, Brüno is taking it to the limit with no pun intended.

Brüno is trying to do his job as an interviewer for his garnered Austrian fashion show called Fashionpolizei (Fashion Police). After being blacklisted (and fired) during fashion week in Milan and during his time in L.A., he continually attempts to find new ways to become famous overnight. Along with his assistant Lutz (Gustaf Hammarsten) Brüno does whatever it takes to make it in America. We can only imagine what the DVD will contain after viewing all the nudity alone. If there is an unrated version, be prepared for some shocking scenes that were blacked out.

Along with borderline-pornographic scenes, there were many deleted scenes from the film that were previewed in the trailer. A certain scene was recently cut due to a lawsuit that was pending during the time of the North American release. Also, due to the recent death of Michael Jackson, a scene where LaToya Jackson is interviewed by Brüno was cut from the final version of the film.

Although Cohen’s Brüno brings a gay soft to hardcore porn ambience, he also manages to send a message throughout the controlled waves of point, laugh, and repeat. Gay life in a homophobic America isn’t easy, even for a gay Austrian who can’t get married, have children, or be famous – without going into the closet. Maybe it’s those three letters, G-A-Y, that makes this movie vulgar to many and unanimously funny to others. Whether audiences can separate a joke from porn, a person from sexual orientation, or acceptance from hate is where the great debate lies in the deep crevasse of Brüno.

Those of you reality TV lovers who’ve been feeling hunger pains of late without your America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway, get ready for a hearty meal because RuPaul’s Drag Race is on the scene! Promising to bring “Realness back to reality television” RuPaul doesn’t disappoint. The basic conceit: Nine drag superstars come together to battle it out for $20,000, the cover and a spread in Paper Magazine, an exclusive global ad for EyeOptics and taken on a tour of every gay pride event this summer as Absolut Vodka’s spokesface. Not bad considering that most of these queens have just been hoofing around their local drag revue in musty clubs working hard for a few dollar bills and some love.

RuPaul knows who his audience is and spends the first portion of every show out of drag doing his best Tim Gunn ‘making it work’ in a suit and glasses then switches back to Drag for the judging and manages to outbitch (and dress) Tyra Banks herself. The challenges are fun and exciting: photoshoots, making a complete outfit out of thrift and dollar store items, pairing up the ladies to work together as a girl group (hard for such individual talents) and overall, be fierce (a word I thought I’d gotten tired of but am more excited about when used in its proper context).

The real stars of the show are, of course, the girls and they are a hot little bunch. I’m sticking my neck out by claiming favorite for Denver’s own drag baby contestant Nina Flowers and if you don’t know this sassy bitch who performs every Sunday at Charlie’s as part of their VIVID revue you need some education via this link right HERE. I say she’ll take the crown of Ru’s show but with such awesome judges as ANTM stylist Santino and even Bob Mackie (for God’s sake!) it’s hard to handicap the vote.

I’m more excited by this show over the next cycle of Top Model because whereas Tyra’s show is just looking for a pretty face and girls that can “smile with their eyes”, Ru is finding the cream of the crop of MEN that have learned to run in stilettos AND pull together tight make-up, outfits, and performance into one sassy package. Something that actually takes talent, not just being in the right place at the right time. One episode down and eight more to go. You can catch RuPaul’s Drag Race Mondays at 9pm on the Logo channel. If you don’t get Logo you can watch each week’s episode in full via this link right HERE. I give the show two snaps up and a “You BETTER work!”.

A note from the editor
My friend Keith and I have spent many a lunch break discussing the world of Tyra Banks and America’s Next Top Model, so we were both thrilled to watch the premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race this week on Logo. We knew Ru was the only one who could out-fierce Tyra and we couldn’t wait to see what he had in store! The past few days have been like a race to see who could finish writing a review first and Keith won, and sealed the deal with his amazing picture with early standout Nina Flowers. Keith is also the Programming Manager for the Denver Film Society and the creator of ConstantWatcher.

Fabulous is the only way that I can describe Sex and the City: The Movie. A word made famous by Carrie Bradshaw, its meaning is vibrated throughout this charming and surprising continuance of our much loved and adored foursome.

Fabulous is the only way that I can describe Sex and the City: The Movie. A word made famous by Carrie Bradshaw, its meaning is vibrated throughout this charming and surprising continuance of our much loved and adored foursome.

Sitting at Thursday’s special pre-screening, I began to get a bit jittery prior to the lights dimming, and as the previews came to an end, I turned to my best friend, and we smiled.

How I have adored Carrie Bradshaw. I had followed her dating escapades and wardrobe creations for six years, and three more were spent memorizing every episode in the complete series collection. I even had my dad custom make me a solid gold plated necklace like Carrie’s, only my name gleamed and dangled from my neck. Carrie was the one to inspire my personal style. Not only have I fallen in love with Fendi, but I have worn more outfits that have gotten a few stares then I can recall in an attempt to “be fabulous”.

As the beginning credits rolled, my mind raced with thoughts about what this movie held in store for us. Would Carrie stay with Big? Would Charlotte get pregnant? Would Samantha ever settle down? And, of course, what sorts of outfits will Carrie be showing off in her long awaited début?

Out of the 81 wardrobe changes, the most stunning was definitely the Vivienne Westwood gown. Drenched in layers of what I can only imagine was silk and satin, she decorated her head with a sinuous vale accompanied by a teal and blue feather adornment. It was the only piece of her entire wardrobe that I loathed. It stole the spotlight from the gown with its intense color, and ultimately strewed up her vale.

Other favorites of mine were the return of the enormous side flower. Made popular by the show, the detachable (and at times sewn on) flower began popping up on the tops of many prominent designers. Some were giant and some were miniature, but many women across the world dared to wear one. Florals, which are incredibly popular this season, made an appearance on not only Carrie, but a few times on Charlotte as well. I also loved the Eiffel tower and cupcake shaped hand bags, Carrie’s argyle red thigh highs, and of course, the mass quantity of Manolo Blahniks.

This movie was well written, unpredictable, and a definite must see for everyone. During the series finale I was left craving more. I desperately needed to know what happened next, and with this movie, I felt that I truly got my Sex and the City closure. The series, however, has been a part of my life for the last ten years. It became a way of life for my friend and I. Just recently, we sat around and discussed which character we all are over Mimosas at the Theatro Hotel restaurant. Carrie Bradshaw has shared relationship trials with us that we can all relate to, and stood strong through all of them. So to every Carrie Bradshaw out there, may you always stay fabulous!
