Maybe the hype was to blame, maybe the writing, maybe key pieces were lost in editing and reshoots, but Suicide Squad squanders its monumental potential with tonal missteps and a gaunt plot that leaves a lot to be desired. After seeing the great cast and the well-executed trailers, I was really rooting for this one, but it seems that DC has missed the mark yet again. *Contains spoilers
Independence Day: Resurgence feels less like the action blockbuster that spawned this lackluster sequel and more like a CG-filled nostalgia cash grab. With the absence of Will Smith, the movie is left trying to scrape together a story from what was left in the bottom of the ID4 jar.
In typical Zack Snyder fashion, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is style over substance. While there are a few iconic moments and characters, the lengthy runtime leaves it bogged down in its own muddy plot.
I could review The Man from U.N.C.L.E. like a woman who studied film theory at a reputable university and who wrote a thesis paper on 1960s cinema. I could talk about Guy Ritchie’s trademark slick style, Hollywood’s onslaught of remakes and sequels, or even make an argument about how the spy genre has evolved along with political views from the Cold War to the War on Terror, or I could tell you the real reason it’s worth seeing this film: the off-the-charts handsomeness of Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer.
