  1. How odd. I was just mulling this very idea over, this very day. I believe that what we are seeing is the final result of Olivia DeHavilland challenging, and beating, the Old Hollywood Studio System.

Back in the day, celebrities had managers and publicists and handlers. They were told what to wear, what to say, who to date, where to be. It was understood that they were a Creation, not necessarily a person.

And sure, in a lot of ways that was bad. And it led to some people leading incredibly horrible lives. It led to some really talented people not getting the help that they needed to deal with living two lives: a Public Life, and a Private Life.

But now the pendulum has swung too far the other way. We have way too many celebrities who want to “Just Be Theirselves”. They don’t seem to realize that their Real Self is horrible, stupid, trashy and ridiculous.

And so you get Anna, Lindsay, Britney, Paris, Tara and a host of others doing as they please. Oh, and Tom Cruise, let’s not forget him.

Note from me to Celebrities: Hire a good manager and publicist and then LISTEN TO THEM when they tell you to wear panties in public and to not fall drunkenly backwards in a bar with your skirt hiked up around your waist. That may be the “Real You” but it is not the “You” that most people want to see.
