John Oliver - host of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on HBO

Looking forward to ‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on HBO

When I heard that Stephen Colbert would be taking over for David Letterman, I was both happy for him and completely devastated. I live for The Colbert Report. The nightly block of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report has become a staple for me. I can’t live with just one satirical news show! Thankfully, HBO handed us a little gift in Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Continue reading

HBO Go a step in the right direction

There are a million different ways to watch TV these days. You can record a show on your DVR, watch it on-demand on your cable box, view it on your computer or iPad using Hulu, Amazon Instant Video or Netflix and even go old school and buy it on DVD and Blu-Ray. And these are just a few of the available options! Unfortunately, each of these methods carries its own inherent limitations. Continue reading

An Idiot Abroad - photo credit Science Channel

An Idiot Abroad finally comes to the U.S.

Before Ricky Gervais was pissing people off at the Golden Globes or writing the original version of The Office with friend and writing partner Stephen Merchant, he was marveling at the brain of Karl Pilkington, a radio producer assigned to the duo for their program. In fact, anyone who has listened to the widely popular Ricky Gervais Show podcasts or watched The Ricky Gervais Show on HBO is familiar with the musings of this “little, round-headed, bald, missing link, chimp-like buffoon”, as Gervais has so sweetly labeled him. Twilight: Eclipse is like True Blood for tweens

When I want to watch sexy vampires and werewolves, I choose True Blood, but if I was ten years younger, I’d be swooning over the sparkly vampires and ab-tastic werewolves in the Twilight movies. If the first film and its sequel New Moon were burgeoning with sexual undertones masquerading as tween-friendly melodrama, then Eclipse is practically porn.

The Ricky Gervais Guide To… The Future is a must-have

The Ricky Gervais Guide to...THE FUTUREAfter years of world-record-setting podcasts and best-selling audiobooks, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington have returned with a brand new entry in their “Guide To…” series, “The Ricky Gervais Guide to…THE FUTURE”. Though it’s hard to top their previous “The Ricky Gervais Guide to…LAW AND ORDER”, delving into the realm of the future offers countless opportunities for Pilkington to muse on such things as internet-connected computer chips implanted in the brain, a new strategy for winning on quiz shows, and the evolution of the little finger. Vintage Trashwire Review – Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny

When George Lucas decided to revive the Star Wars saga, it was his goal to give fans a back-story of how exactly Anakin Skywalker transformed into Darth Vader. We knew how the story ended, but he wanted to show everyone how it began. Unfortunately for Lucas, the new Star Wars trilogy was, by most accounts, not very good. Unlike Lucas, when Tenacious D aims to tell audiences the history of how they became the greatest band in the world, they do a damn good job of it.

The basic story involves Jack Black and Kyle Gass’ epic quest to obtain the Pick of Destiny, a mystical guitar pick fashioned from Satan’s tooth. In Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, we learn the back-story for the formation of The D, from the JB’s humble beginnings as a rebellious child in a religious family in Kickapoo to KG’s Yoda-like training in how to rock. Any fan of the 1999 HBO series (now available on DVD in the Tenacious D: The Complete Materworks collection) featuring the duo playing at open-mic gigs and encountering Sasquatch, will absolutely love every minute of Pick of Destiny.

The film references classic D moments like their encounter with Lee, their first hard-core fan, who is referenced in the song “Lee” from their previous album and also in one of the episodes of their HBO series. Sasquatch also makes an appearance in Pick of Destiny during a great sequence that involves Jack and a whole forest full of psychedelic mushrooms. Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl is also back in a very special appearance and Tim Robbins has a great cameo as a crazed man who is after the legendary Pick of Destiny. The best cameo goes to Ben Stiller, who is also an executive producer, as a very knowledgeable Guitar Center employee. Stiller’s hair and make up in the scene are reason enough to pay attention.

Any fans of Tenacious D will really enjoy Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, but it will also be enjoyable for those who are not yet “psycho fans” of the greatest band in the world. You’ll definitely want to check this one out and pick up the soundtrack featuring all the great songs from the movie.
