Documentaries can be approached in many different ways, but the ones we see most commonly are usually composed of archival footage and talking head interviews—maybe a reenactment or two if they’re trying to go for a little more dramatic flair.
The new documentary Frida from director Carla Gutierrez opts for a different way to tell the story of legendary artist Frida Kahlo. In this film, Kahlo’s own words are combined with animations from her paintings to give us a more internal glimpse at her thoughts, feelings, passions, and how all of those emotions translated into her art.
It’s not just the great narration of her diary, it’s the visual element of interpreting the things she wrote about in her diary through her artwork.
She’s a fascinating figure, so brilliant and artistic, so passionate and true to her beliefs, but also vulnerable and human, and this doc lets us see those sides of her.
