‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ is Cinematic Mac and Cheese

Check out the quick review of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

Franchise movies can start to feel a bit like mac and cheese. It’s easy, it’s safe, kids like it and it reminds adults of their childhood. It’s a pretty generic dinner. But do we really want to have mac and cheese every day?

The first Ghostbusters movie from 1984 is a comedy classic and one of the most beloved movies around for good reason. The very fact that it’s such a classic has made it really difficult for any of the follow-up movies to even come close. There have been highs and lows, but even then it’s just been kind of meh.

Now we have Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which at least seems to remember that these movies are supposed to be funny. It’s still got a heavy layer of family-friendly nostalgia milking and fan service, but it’s not as schmaltzy and corny as Afterlife and it doesn’t have as much cringey forced comedy as Ghostbusters 2016. But it’s also just not great.

There are a few laughs that land in here and Paul Rudd is charming as ever, but it feels so bland and generic that the whole movie will just leave your brain minutes after watching it.

So it’s not like Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is offensively bad, but after we’ve been treated to a delicious cinematic meal from Denis Villeneuve, it’s kind of hard to be excited about yet another plate of franchise mac and cheese.
