‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ Delivers CGI Action Fun

Watch my quick review of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube and follow me on Letterboxd.

If you’re a real movie fan, you can appreciate all kinds of cinema. I’ve done reviews here for sweeping epics like Dune, tiny indie dramas like Shayda, and comic book movie misfires like Madame Web. But sometimes what I really want is a big CGI-filled action spectacle. Enter Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

The previous film in this franchise, Godzilla vs Kong, certainly fit the bill and they’re going for another bite of that big dumb action apple with Godzilla x Kong

This movie takes place largely in the Hollow Earth as new threats are discovered and new characters are introduced including a mini Kong, a quippy kaiju veterinarian (Dan Stevens), a Monarch research leader (Rachel House), and a few new gigantic monsters.

But let’s be honest, this movie is not really about the plot or the character development, it’s about two giant CGI monsters destroying cities while they fight other giant CGI monsters.

And this movie definitely delivers on that promise.

There are more world landmarks to be stomped on, more close-ups of snarling monsters, more multicolored laser beams of atomic breath and gigantic explosions.

Godzilla x Kong knows what we really want to see is monster action. It feels like every exposition dump or quippy line of dialogue in there to let us know the movie has no intention of taking itself too seriously. You’re here to have fun and that’s what they want to give you.

There were more than a few times when I whispered to myself “This is so stupid” but as I was thinking that, I had the biggest smile on my face.

So is this movie totally stupid? Of course! But it is also a lot of fun? Absolutely!
